This week, we shine a spotlight on Sound Sensation, a local leader in event entertainment. I recently connected with its owner and King of Prussia resident, Frank Raffa, to learn more about their commitment to quality and personalized service. They create unforgettable experiences for weddings and private events alike. Join us as we explore their unique approach to entertainment, from skilled DJs to innovative lighting and photo booth options. Discover how Sound Sensation is dedicated to making every occasion special for our community.

What sets Sound Sensation apart from other event entertainment companies in the industry?
We aren’t just a booking agency that subcontracts work out. Our core staff of DJs are employees who share a common vision and standards. This allows us to provide a higher quality entertainment experience than other companies. In addition, we don’t charge different prices for our talent. Everyone is really good at what they do, and they consistently receive high marks from our clients; otherwise, I wouldn’t have them out there. We train internally, and we change our approach as the times and the clients change. You have to constantly keep it fresh, no matter how long you’ve been in the game. Weddings are one of the most important memories in the lives of our clients. They have a bunch of moving parts, and we send out a two-DJ team to make doubly sure everything goes according to plan. The team consists of a “headliner” and an assistant DJ. Clients know who their headliner is up front and work with that person during the planning process. You can think of your headliner DJ as your entertainment consultant leading up to the wedding. And when it’s go time, the couple is comfortable and confident in their ability and the plan, and the DJ fully understands the expectations of the couple.
How do you tailor your DJ services to match the unique vibe of each wedding or private event?
We take a no “cookie-cutter” approach. We do not want to go out there and play the same cheesy songs, MC the same script, or do the same presentation for every event. Our DJs take the time to ask the right questions and get to know the client. In addition, we provide our clients with a planning portal so they can give us all the little details as well as a feel for their music vibe. Your DJ is going to go over this with you well in advance and have a conversation around the whole vision for the event. How does the client want the event space to look when guests are let in? What is the client’s favorite music? Do you prefer quick mixes in and out, or a longer song? Do you want to focus more on the party than the formalities? etc.
Can you walk us through your process for selecting and setting up the perfect event lighting?
We’re not going to push lighting if the event or the space doesn’t benefit from it. But in cases where it will make an impact, lighting can go a long way in setting the perfect vibe for your guests. You really need to know the space you will be working in so you can recommend what works best. Our company has been performing at most of the area venues for many years, but if it’s a new space for us, we will do a site survey and look at photos of what the space looks like when it is lit. The first rule is that the lighting should complement the space. If we are doing up-lighting, for instance, you want to highlight the architectural features of the room. Are there columns along the wall? Is there a rock wall that should stand out? Are there dark spots where you might want to draw attention to something? These days, much of the lighting is battery-powered, which offers a lot of flexibility to put fixtures where you need them. Also, we provide enough fixtures to cover the room properly. Some entertainment companies do a standard 8 or 10 fixtures. If the room really needs 20, we’re bringing that many. We want the client to get their money’s worth and get that wow factor. When considering the dance-floor area, we avoid things like laser dots, which look terrible in the clients' photos later. Instead, we use more of a wash effect and try to bounce light off the ceiling or walls so it’s not right in guests' eyes. So in short, know the client’s vision, know your event space, and customize the lighting in a way that complements both.
What role do your photo booths play in enhancing the overall guest experience at events?
Photo booths allow guests to ham it up and be their natural selves. It’s not a formal, posed photo where a photographer is directing you on what to do. Instead, we have an attendant there to help them get started with a photo session, then stand back and let them do their thing. Photo booths enhance the guest experience by capturing candid, fun moments, then allowing them to share the experience quickly. Today's photo booths offer not only photos but also animated GIFs, boomerangs, and video. You can also customize a photo booth experience with a certain theme, like a glam photo shoot, for instance. Photo booths can also be wrapped to reflect branding for corporate events.
How do you work with clients to create a cohesive entertainment package that fits their specific needs and budget?
It all begins with a conversation. We will listen to the client’s needs and give them some options. We offer pricing in both à la carte and packages. The packages will save some money by bundling some services together. As long as a client has a reasonable expectation for the budget, we can usually come to some agreement that gives them what they need without sacrificing a quality entertainment experience.
What are some of the most memorable or unique events you’ve worked on, and what made them stand out?
We love when someone wants to create a unique experience. We had an Alice in Wonderland-themed birthday party. We were able to get some character stand-ups and do some really fun lighting with that one. We used a moving head fixture to project the Cheshire cat, who would appear and disappear in different parts of the room randomly. We also had a Halloween-themed wedding where we helped coordinate the bride’s appearance for the ceremony. The groom entered the ceremony space with a theatrical fog effect and ominous music, then walked to a coffin standing at one end of the room. He opened it to reveal the bride and release her from her slumber before getting married. We’ve also created sci-fi-themed photo booth experiences and projected star fields on the ceiling for a few events to give it that space theme. We have DJ’d at horse farms and on city rooftops. This business really takes you to some unique settings at times.
How do you ensure that your team stays current with the latest trends in event technology and entertainment?
We attend some DJ-focused conferences like DJX in Atlantic City. Those are a great way to see in person all the latest gear and also do some classroom training with our peers across the entertainment industry. Believe it or not, there are a lot of DJ “influencers” out there on social media who offer great content these days. We also train our own staff in-house on how to keep up with music and feedback from clients. We definitely don’t DJ the way we did 10 or 20 years ago.
Can you explain how you handle last-minute changes or unexpected challenges during an event?
DJs need to think on their feet and be flexible. Last-minute changes happen all the time, especially with weddings. You may have checked and double-checked everything with your client before the event. Then the day arrives, and the timing has changed, or the weather is not cooperating, or the food is running late, and the caterer needs you to do an unexpected 30-minute dance set before dinner. You may go to line up the bridal party, and someone is not there, or their name has changed, and the couple didn’t realize it. You need to always be ready to make an adjustment along the way. Experience and training prepare you for the worst. We always have backup equipment and backup staff in case of an emergency. Our team is trained to handle these situations and keep it professional and imperceptible to the guests. That’s one of the reasons we like to have a team at a wedding. Two heads are better than one when you have a lot of moving parts.
What advice do you have for couples or hosts planning their first major event?
Find vendors with good experience that you can trust, communicate your wants, and then let them make it happen for you so you can relax when your event arrives. Invite people who want to celebrate you or your occasion. If your goal is to have a dance party, invite people who will dance and that you love to party with. Be present. If it’s a wedding and you are the couple, guests want to be where you are. If you are out of the room for most of the dance portion of the night, they’re going to wonder where you are. If you are on the dance floor having fun, they’re going to be there with you, creating good vibes. Figure out your priorities and leverage your budget towards those things. If food is important to you, budget for that. Avoid spending money on things that won’t contribute to the memory and end up in the trash later.
Do you offer any special packages or seasonal promotions, and how can potential clients learn more or book your services?
We’re making an effort right now to do more with our social media and give potential clients more samples of our work and planning advice, so follow us on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook!
Do you have a special offer you’d like to extend to Spotlight readers?
If a potential client reads about us in the Spotlight and mentions it, we will throw in fun LED foam party batons for all the guests with a booking.
